The column outside the entry to the Mealey Hotel in Oelwein, Iowa. The reason Farwell Brown took this photograph was because the hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places. The old hotel was renovated and was converted to luxury studio and one-bedroom apartments. He thought this might provide an example for a possible renovation and re-use of Ames's Sheldon-Munn Hotel. Mealey, a hotel in Oelwein, Iowa. When Farwell Brown was a boy, his father would take him to the family's farm property in Fayette County and they would stay in this hotel. The Mealy is now designated a National Historic Landmark. Farwell Brown took this picture in the 1980s with the hope that it would create an interest in Ames for having the Sheldon-Munn Hotel on Main Street added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Mealey was converted from hotel to luxury studio and one-bedroom apartments. There is also a restaurant on the main floor.
